For almost two years, most schools in Uganda were closed in order to limit the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. For the past three months, educational institutions have been allowed to open once again. As predicted, the restart has taken some time. Meanwhile, some 300 young people are now being taught in six classes at Beatrice Secondary School Kyankwanzi.
School Principal Regina Nasseremba is in her element. The campus has finally come to life again and she is able to apply herself according to her strengths. Recently, the care facility at the school was filled with patients. No one knows for certain as to whether the coronavirus was to blame. No tests took place. Fortunately, however, the disease has generally taken a milder course there.
Classes are taking place already in the Annina Hänny school building, although the construction workers are yet to finish their work there. The plasterers, painters and plumbers are still busy. The plumbers are hard at work on ensuring that the biogas plant can be put into operation. As far as electricity is concerned, Regina wants to make sure that the supply is reliable, as the electricity provided by the state isn’t always available. Therefore, the school Principal is looking into various options regarding solar power systems, although the size of the building is a challenge for the experts.
The students will soon break up for the Easter holidays. The holidays will be a welcome break in which to spend time with family members and to relax. And that also includes Regina and her loved ones. But it goes without saying that the “boss” will still be keeping a close eye on her multifaced business.
