Some good news to start with: Regina Nasseremba’s Beatrice Secondary School Kyankwanzi, Uganda topped the national rankings for the state-recognised final examinations in the district of Kyankwanzi. We are delighted by the news. Regina is very happy with her current teaching staff. The leadership group, the “Special Management Team”, are also continuing to prove their worth. These are six teachers, each of whom is responsible for a section of the school.
The “sewing vocational course” department is particularly worthy of mention. It is headed up by a man and is very popular. All 83 pupils in the first year of secondary school chose this subject. They are introduced to sewing in several smaller groups. Material, zips and button are provided. The youngsters choose from what is on offer and sew a shirt, a skirt or a tote bag. When the parents come to the school on the visiting day, the youngsters want their work to be sold. As a result, there are no financial losses for the school. Materials and ingredients are then bought again for future courses using the proceeds from the sales.
Construction at the Annina Hänny school building continues with African composure. The labour contract with the engineer included the walls and ceilings of the building. These works are complete. Regina or an expert for each profession are now responsible again. Although work is continuing, Regina has to visit the construction site every time there is a question or something is missing. The toilet doors, the window glazing on the top two floors, hard-wearing floors on three storeys and the exterior sealing (varnishing) of the building are still outstanding. The scaffolding which has recently gone back up will now be used to first run the wastewater pipes on the exterior walls of the building to the biogas plant and then for the protective coating. We, in the web team, have come to the conclusion that it is better not to compare Swiss and Ugandan construction methods.
A welcome development is making progress at Hill View primary school. The water drilling site has progressed deep enough that clean water is flowing, although we hope there will be more of the precious commodity in slightly deeper layers. Work will therefore continue after a drilling break. At the same time, a modest house for four teachers has also sprung up. Regina needs timber for the roof construction. She therefore has the trees that stood on the boundaries of the property cut down. A wall will surround and protect the premises in the future. Head teacher Claire Namiro remains motivated at Hill View.
Principle Regina’s mother has reached the ripe old age, for Uganda, of 85. The senior citizen was honoured at a well-deserved party at which the bishop celebrated Mass and TV crews were present.
