While the summer holidays are coming to an end here, in Uganda they have recently started. Most pupils go home for a month. This means a less full diary for headmistress Regina. Without school operations, various building works still need to be managed on the campus.
Since it was already occupied during the trimester, the second girls’ dormitory is receiving its final construction work during the summer break. In the dining hall, too, a school ceremony and a mathematics seminar have already been held. After these, it became evident that there were indentations in the existing floor, which led to the decision to install a more stable version with cement. What is still lacking are a few steps, the window panes and the colour for the interior and exterior coat of paint of the walls. The kitchen with the wood firing has been built and the new pans have been bought. The first fire is ignited under the direction of the oven maker. The school’s own chef is proud of and pleased with his new, modern workplace.
Regina had the unpleasant experience that water becomes scarce during the months with little rain. Regina sought a sustainable solution so as not to have to cart water there from out of school area in future. A specialised company from the capital Kampala attended to the problem. It undertook a machine-based deep drilling and came upon ample, good-quality water. The cost for the drilling and the construction of the well was kindly assumed by Susanne Levi from Steinmaur. The first, manually dug well is located at another part of the site and continues to give out as much precious water as it can. Having enough water is a great benefit and makes everyday life easier for the pupils, the teachers and the staff.
Regina is in contact with Ugandan universities that train teachers. Young people who are studying regularly come to the BSSK to do an internship. First appointments of successful graduates are already taking place, a win-win situation for both parties, as Regina knows the young teachers and they already know what Madam Regina expects of them.
