Valued Sponsors and Interested Parties,

At the end of January, the new school year began in Uganda. But this does not mean that all pupils travel to school on a specific day. Up to three weeks later, parents are still contacting the school because they want to enrol their children there. This is not just the case at the BSSK; the start of the academic year is just as slow at other educational institutions, which means additional efforts have to be made. - Regina is determined to have a good team of teachers. Not all of the teachers returning from the long holiday were given their jobs back. She knows that having motivated and dedicated teaching staff raises the quality of the school and contributes to a good working environment, which ultimately has a positive effect on the entire school community.

In the Annina Hänny school building, the last of the sanitary facilities were connected to the pipes. While this was going on, Regina instructed the young people how to use these modern facilities. On the top floor, the girls’ dormitories were furnished. The combination of the first secondary class with the sixth means that the older pupils can support the younger ones.

The official opening of the beautiful, multi-storey school building is planned to take place on 22 May 2025 with a delegation from Switzerland due to attend. The gardeners are currently working on the surroundings. Composite slabs are being laid on the paths up to a certain distance away from the buildings. These mean that less dirt is carried inside during wet weather. At present, it is dusty, hot and dry. The withered plants are barely visible on the red earth. The rain will come soon, it will be green again, and in May, the BSSK campus will be shown in all its splendour.

As already reported in earlier newsletters, there has been drilling for water at the Hill View primary school in Ntwetwe for several months now. It was a long journey and the work was proclaimed a resounding success only recently. At the beginning, the workers were digging by hand using simple tools. Then they used a machine powered by a generator. During the works, state-owned electricity was supplied, which meant that the work could be done more efficiently. Just before the desired depth was reached, the machine broke down. Regina looked for another business which was prepared to take over the construction site and which could get to the much sought-after water with stronger equipment. Over the course of the works, the drill shaft had to be enclosed with suitable stones and cement to stabilise it. The rainy season also delayed the progress of the works. But now, the 300 children and their teachers are delighted. Access to fresh, clean water that you can drink without boiling is a great benefit to everyone.

We hope you have a colourful spring!
